What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a deep, natural state of relaxation that we all pass through briefly each time we go to sleep and wake up.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses this state of deep relaxation to bypass the “critical sensor” which exists in each person’s unconscious mind. The critical sensor is a limiting factor. which can make it difficult or impossible for people to achieve their goals

How does the critical sensor do this?

The mind is divided into two parts, the conscious and the unconscious. The conscious level of the mind is roughly 10% and the unconscious 90%.The critical sensor exists at the unconscious level of mind.

It decides what we will and won’t believe. So for example if you look out of the window on a sunny day and you are told that it’s raining you wouldn’t believe this. You can see that it isn’t.

Your critical sensor came into being when you were about six or seven years old. The unconscious mind which contains your critical sensor does not understand time. Another way of putting this is to say “that in the unconscious mind it is always now”.

Because the unconscious mind does not understand time it never updates it's information. So it still pictures you as having only the abilities that you had at the age of six or seven.

Of course consciously you know that this is not so. However we all experience situations in which we feel awkward. Or don’t perform at our best for no apparent reason. These generally occur at the worst possible times such as at a job interview, when meeting an attractive member of the opposite sex or our future in laws. This occurs because at the unconscious level of mind we see ourselves as having only the abilities that we had at the age of 6 or7. These feelings of inadequacy which arise don't make sense to the conscious mind leaving the individual baffled as we why s/he is not performing adequately.

How can this be overcome?

By bypassing the critical sensor during hypnosis it is possible to give beneficial suggestions of desired change. For example that the person will become more confident, no longer feel the desire to smoke or overeat, will enjoy good quality, refreshing sleep etc.

Once the individual leaves the hypnotic state they will find themselves acting on these suggestions. The beneficial changes they desire will come about naturally and with ease.

Is it always that simple?

Not always, although for many people, around 85% of our clients this is all that is needed to overcome their problem. In some cases it is necessary to deal with traumas in the individuals past with which they have not come to terms. Such unresolved traumas reduce the persons effectiveness, success and ability to enjoy life. Fortunately there are a number of techniques available that assist the individual in overcoming past upsetting experiences and enable them to get more out of life.

What is hypno-psychotherapy?

It is the practice of combining hypnotherapy with knowledge available from various schools of psychology as well as practical techniques such as Transactional Analysis, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), assertiveness training etc.

How will I feel whilst in hypnosis?

You'll feel pleasantly relaxed as you do when dropping off to sleep. You'll be aware of what's happening around you but not bothered by it. Traffic or other noise for example won't disturb your relaxation.

Will I be unconscious during the session?

No as previously explained you'll be aware of what is going on around you. If you were unconscious you couldn't take in the beneficial suggestions being given during your treatment session or benefit from them.

Is there any possibility that I could get stuck in hypnosis?

No this has never happened to anyone in the history of the world. At the end of your session you will be brought up out of hypnosis. You could in fact bring yourself out of hypnosis at any time if you so wished.

Will I tell you all my secrets?

Whatever is discussed during your treatment is private and confidential. Whilst relaxing in hypnosis clients are not usually asked to speak. We would normally speak about your treatment session, how well you relaxed etc. after it has been completed and you have been brought up out of hypnosis.

At the start of therapy your case history would be taken, this is a written form of our discussion about your problem or goal. This is seen only by your therapist..

Can I forced to act against my will whilst in hypnosis?

No, you will accept only suggestions which are for your benefit. If anyone were foolish enough to give you suggestions not for your benefit you would simply ignore them.

What kind of problems can hypnotherapy help with?

A wide variety including smoking, food related issues. Phobias, panic attacks, insomnia, exam and driving test nerves. The practice does not take cases of drug addiction, alcoholism or treat children under the age of 16.

What happens during a session?

You'll be invited to sit in a comfortable chair or lie down whichever you prefer. You will be spoken to about feelings of calmness, relaxedness and confidence to help you relax physically and mentally. Your depth of relaxation will be tested before you receive suggestions about overcoming your problem or achieving your goal.

This is to ensure that you are relaxing sufficiently deeply and that the suggestions given will be effective. Checking your level of relaxation does not usually involve touch. Occasionally it is necessary to touch a clients wrist to check relaxation. The clients permission is always asked first.


How soon will I feel better?

Most clients feel benefit after a first session and go on to completely overcome their problem. The practice specialises in short term therapy and most treatments are successfully completed in five to ten treatment sessions. A very short time indeed considering that many of our clients have been experiencing their problems for a number of years.
